Short Description:
Ever had a cup of Uganda? Athough not as famed as Guatemala or Ethiopia in terms of its origin, this coffee is a real gem and a must try! It is very unique amongst other more well known East African coffees. We sourced this coffee last year and found it to be equally good this year - so once again I am proud to offer this delicious coffee from the hard working folks of the Sipi Falls cooperative.

Coop Information
Bugisu is the name of the tribe that farms the mountain, and Bugisu is one of the finest washed Arabica specialty coffees in the world. The Sipi Falls Coffee Project was begun in 1999 as a model of farmer re-education and innovation for the 5000 small land holders in the area. The whole family helps to pick the red cherries and dries them in the sun before transporting them for sale on donkeys, bicycles or baskets on the head. Modern sustainable farming practices have helped to dramatically increase yield as well as quality.
Winston Churchill, inspired by the beauty of the countryside, called Uganda the “pearl of Africa.” Mt. Elgon lies in the Eastern reaches of the country, straddling the Uganda/Kenya border. From the edge of the Mountain, the expanse of the parched Karamoja plains stretches West towards the Nile, heat shimmering up from the dry red soil. But it is cool up on the ancient volcanic slopes of Mt. Elgon, tempered by altitude, primary forest and the numerous streams, rivers and dramatic waterfalls that plunge off the cliffs. The Mt. Elgon microclimate is ideal for growing high-quality arabica beans.
The altitude of this coffee growing area lies between 1,600 and 1,900 metres, which brings a difficult terrain to traverse in the rainy seasons. Very often there are no roads, only dirt tracks which are washed away by the rains. But the resourceful Bagisu tribesmen who live on the mountain have become expert coffee farmers and have developed their own transportation methods: Donkeys. Grown in this magical setting, Sipi Falls Coffee is the only Organic Bugisu Arabica Coffee available in Uganda.
