Portola Proudly Presents...

Local Orange County artist Jeff Glover.  It is our belief that creating world-class coffee is as much art as it is science.  And after staring at rows of my retail packaged coffee on the shelf, it dawned on me that my coffee loses its identity in the package.  So, I figured no better way to highlight the character and personality of each coffee than to have an artist capture it in the form of a painting.  Jeff Glover's amazing artwork is then used as the basis in creating the individual labels that get placed on our retail coffee bags.  Enjoy the art - through your eyes and your palate.
...and remember, Portola Handcrafted Coffee and Jeff Glover Arts.

Contact Jeff Glover to inquire about his artwork displayed on this site or on his website at www.jeffgloverarts.com. If you would like to commission a piece for your home, office or publication, you can reach him at jeffgloverarts@gmail.com.  He also creates illustrations for e-books, self-published books, and Print-on-Demand books.

Experience as an artist
My first  (remembered) painting was probably a foretelling of the future. I was in 1st grade and painted a picture of a helicopter – using only red. The teacher was not pleased and let me know that “That’s not how we do it."   Since then, I’ve never done artwork the way it’s “supposed” to be done.  I’ve enjoyed creating art for friends, and selling a few pieces, but have never really explored the possibility of being shown in a gallery until recently.

Inspiration
Telling a story in a single frame is my focus.  My main inspiration comes from music. I listen to a song I’ve heard maybe dozens of times and like a light shining on something lost in the back of a closet, I hear that one phrase.  It paints the picture for me and my challenge is to get it onto the canvas.  The picture “Daughter” is an example. From a Pearl Jam song, these phrases painted the picture for me: “Alone...listless...breakfast table in an otherwise empty room. Young girl...violins...center of her own attention. The mother reads aloud, child, tries to understand it. Tries to make her proud." The girl holds an empty book, the letters scattered to the floor, and ignores the world outside her room.
I greatly admire artists James Yang, David Lesh, Yuri Kuznetsov and my friend Lance Green for their single-frame story-telling abilities.

Technique
I use acrylics for the most part. Sometimes I mix media with collage or found objects.  The heavily-textured style is a result of many layers of thick paint, dry-brushed to catch the light and tell the story. All stories have layers and texture if you look closely.   I’m self-taught, although I'll take a class  now and then to learn a technique. It's my dream to go to art school.
